Durango
Normally when we arrive somewhere with a bed (warmshowers/motel/hotel) we just crash out the moment we arrive. When we got into Durango things were different. There was so much going on that we felt energised to head straight outside to check out the scene. We didn't even shower or get out of our cycling clothes.
We are staying at a hotel in the centre on town. The entrance to which is sandwiched between shops. Behind the narrow entrance is courtyard off which are all the rooms. It is cheap and basic (no towels / no toilet seat)
We wandered around and every other shop seemed to be selling Christmas decorations. I got a haircut and managed to convey my wishes to the woman cutting it.
We found a market with a food stall where we had delicious chilli rellenos.
We decided to see if there was a shop where we could get fuel for the stove. Lo and behold, there is a store that sells only 96% alcohol. Perfect. The owner directed me to a shoe repair shop as I needed the sole of my cycling sandals glueing. All of this was within a few minutes walk of our hotel. We went to bed feeling amazed that we had sorted all these things so easily and quickly.
The shops in Durango are very specialised. I spotted two street stalls selling only shoe laces and three shops selling only baseball hats.
We filled our rest day with a leisurely walk around town to enjoy the churches and architecture. It is a lovely city with a lovely feel. Found a veggie restaurant where we had a 4 course meal for 240 pesos (about £12) for both of us.
Durango is in full swing for the build up to Christmas. This meant we felt obliged to have an evening trip into the centre too see all the Christmas lights.
We treated ourselves to some decorations that we have adorned the bike with.
All in all, a wonderful stay. Ready to get back on the road tomorrow.
