We took a rest day in La Fortuna. We did lots of chilling out and spent time getting to know the other campers at the campsite. We did manage one outing to a nearby river with a rope swing over a deep pool. (Dropping off a rope swing doesn't count as diving ;) )

We loved hanging round in the crystal clear refreshing water.

We could not believe our luck. The campsite was home to three sloths. This one turned its head towards us with its eyes closed and with an apparent smile on its face as if it was the most content being on earth. This was a three-toed sloth, the other ones were two-toed.

One of the nice touches on the campsite were these plastic awnings to pitch tents under. We had some very heavy rain during our stay and the extra protection was greatly appreciated.

Our ride away took us eastwards. We were clearly in pineapple growing territory. One of the features of the day was lorries loaded to the brim with harvested pineapples - the sweet smell emanating from them was a treat for the senses.

We made good progress and covered 115km meaning we made it to another campsite. This one with a pool. It also had incredible bird life and a troop of monkeys that lived in the trees above our tent. They were enjoying feasting on the guavas.

The campground was run by Adrián who was an incredible host. He made us feel super welcome (he also praised my Spanish which is an easy way to get into my good books). He cooked us a delicious veggie meal including fried yuca and plantain crisps.

We continued our journey eastwards. A feature of the day was the huge rivers we crossed. This one is murky from the rainfall over the past few days but many were totally clear.

We stopped at 12.30 to view the eclipse through a piece of obsidian we had been given earlier in the trip. The photo doesn't show it but a slice of the sun was obscured by the moon.

Sadly our rear tyre failed. I was frustrated by this as there was still plenty of tread on it. Thankfully we had the spare that we had got via Elani to put on.

Food is such a feature of our days that it seems appropriate to include a few more photos of what we eat. I've got rice+beans with eggs, fried plantain and fried cheese.

Rachel has bean and cheese empanadas (meaning 'in bread') with a cabbage salad. Yum yum.

Danny and Adrián passed us several times during the afternoon on their petrol powered bikes. We have seen a few of these in Costa Rica, it seems as though it is easy to buy kits to add to pedal bikes too make them into mopeds. They seem truly bonkers.

  1. Food looks great! Hope you got the tyre fixed OK. Not tempted to go petrol powered on some of the hills? ;-)
