- Fairweather tourists who dive into a hotel for 2 nights at the suggestion of rain on the forecast
- Seasoned travellers who know there is no fun to be had riding in 8°C rain when there is a whole year to adventure in.
After our big day into Galeana we made the most of our time in the hotel meaning we left town at midday. We didn't get far as we passed a gordita stall on the way out of town. This had brightly painted concrete tables and benches and a really nice vibe.
Finally got under way and headed to Pablillo which wasn't far. We then began climbing into a nature reserve. We were spoilt for choice about where to camp. Settled on a nice flat patch of ground amongst trees and away from the road. It was a clear night and we were over 2300m - needless to say it was a cold night. We were cosy in our tent and got quite a surprise to find the tent frozen solid in the morning.
We were glad we had camped before the summit as this meant we could start the day with a climb to warm ourselves up. Cold aches when fingers come back to life never get any easier.
We stopped at La Ascensión for food after a long descent. We were quite chilled so were delighted to find the cafe cooked on a wood fired stove and we were invited to warm up beside it. Had another fill of gorditas and a cup of champurado (maize flour, sugar, milk, chocolate and cinnamon) a perfect combination of a warming drink and an energy drink.
We checked the weather forecast and noticed the incoming rain mentioned above. This prompted us to aim for Doctor Arroyo to get a hotel for 2 nights to sit out the rain. This resulted in our biggest day so far (124 km).
We are feeling very pleased with our efforts but more than that we were treated to the most amazing scenery all day long. High plains, mountain views, interesting flora - all under a bright blue sky. Our day ended with the longest, straightest road we have ridden so far.
No day on the road would be complete without a selfie with a passing family :)
Doctor Arroyo is a bustling town and we have a great room in a hotel in the town centre. Just a few minutes walk from, you guessed it, a gordita restaurant.
We have started a shared Google Photos album where we will put additional photos that we don't use in the blog or on Instagram. The link to it is: https://photos.app.goo.gl/xaLo3e3Ff69czWfG6
