If you have clicked on the Strava link you will see that we have done a whopping 71km during the past two days. A combination of Rachel building her strength again and being in a place so beautiful that we don't want to rush through it.
Once the day visitors left, we had the waterfalls to ourselves so we treated ourselves to a super morning swim before starting our day.
The landscape was incredibly green. Whilst the picture below might look like the English Lake District at first glance, the vegetation could not be more different.
The road had vines and creepers hanging down that were kept at bay at the height of passing vehicles.
There were trees with huge buttress roots.
We rolled into the lagoon-side town of Sontecomapan which turned out to be a major tourist resort. We declined a boat tour but took advantage of a cafe. Eggs and refried beans for me, plain rice for Rachel who still did not have her appetite. The water was crystal clear and there was a great swimming spot right in the centre of town. After our peaceful morning swim we didn't feel like joining the crowds so we carried on.
We reached the lake at Catemaco and Rachel was ready for a rest. We treated ourselves to a lakeside hotel with a delightful garden.
We started the next day with a walk along the Malecon to take in the lake views and bird life.
It feels obligatory to stop and look at the grand cathedrals/churches. This one was well worth it as the ceiling was decorated in a unique way we have not seen before.
We meandered around the lake. The road was incredibly quiet. We marvelled at the diverse plant life and stopped to take in lake views whenever we got the chance.
Rachel was very restrained at the basket shop - she only looked and didn't want to buy anything.
The reason for the short day was to end up in this cabaña overlooking the lake. It is an ecotourism accommodation and we are in a bamboo cabin with great views which is surrounded by lush jungle plants. We have booked a guide for the afternoon so it's going to take us to three local waterfalls.
Tomorrow we expect to head away from the lake towards yet more waterfalls.
