What would you do?
To see details of this section:
It is raining really heavily (as in tropical downpour) and it's forecast to rain all day. You want to get to your chosen destination that day.
The options:
100km on the road which will include significant sections on a busy highway.
Or ...
55 km which will include significant sections of dirt road, likely to be muddy because of the rain.
Can you guess what we did?
Yes - we took the dirt road.
It was great fun. Super quiet and through some stunning lush forest.
Our day began crossing this river that flows though Salto de Agua where we began our day. Even though it was pouring down, it was too warm for coats.
The first minor hitch was the section of clay mud that we had to push through which clogged the wheels up and took a lot of work with sticks to clear up.
This is typical of what we were riding through all day (apart from the fact that this bit was concrete, and thus photo worthy).
Lunch outside a shop in the middle of nowhere. We asked if they made coffees and their initial answer was 'no'. However when they saw us bedraggled eating outside they made us one each for free. Amazing.
Shortly after we spotted this stream with a path down to it. We used it to get all the lingering clay off the bike.
Just as the dirt started to get better quality we managed to pick up a flat. There was a handy gate to use as a bike stand and this puddle to find the hole and wash hands in.
We got to our destination, Palenque, having had a great day on the bike. Camping at a tourist resort within a km of so from the ruins. It is still raining so we are thankful for the restaurant for shelter from the rain and to have a veggie burger and chips (to ring the changes).
The plan for tomorrow is to visit the ruins.
