CDMX 2

To see details of this section:

We had a great second day in the city. Rachel has posted about the wonderful Museo de Artes Populares

However we began our day at the Museo de Bellas Artes. The highlight of this for me was the huge murals on the top floor (as well as the stunning art deco inspired interior).

We fortified ourselves with a huarache. This is an oval of baked maize dough topped with onions, cheese, cilantro, potato and beans covered with an omelette. Interestingly, huarache also means a type of sandal and I assume the food gained its name because of its shape.

We had a quick visit to the Museo National de la Revolución

before going up the Monumento a la Revolución. We went up with Emiliano who is the son of a friend of ours (Sam Tarbuck) who lives in CDMX and had come into the city centre to meet us.

There is a lift that ascends up the centre and then a staircase to the very top that goes between the inner and outer domes. When it was first built there was a lift between the two domes that used wooden rollers to climb in a curved trajectory.

We finished off our day with a vegan meal  with Rhodri; a fellow cycle tourist we met about a week ago and who was also in the city for a few days.

A combination of a metro ride and a crowded bus soon reunited us with the bike.

A super food blue maize quesadilla gave us energy for the short ride to the Pirámides del Sol/de la Luna.  I'm pleased to report that my flat pedal + Crocs combination works well on the bike: I didn't miss being clipped in for today's ride.

These are much bigger than the one at Tula. Even on an overcast day they were a sight to behold. The entire complex is extensive and took a couple of hours to walk around.

We are camping just a few hundred meters from them and nearly fell over in shock when we spotted the icon in the corner of their sign.
