Salt flats

Another hot day.

We had our first experience of getting water from a roadside filter for a few cents. We thought we were just playing it safe doing this early in the morning but as it turned out we were very glad we did it when we did as there were not many other opportunities for the rest of the day.

We learned a few lessons today. Firstly that water tunnels under the road provide nice shelter from the sun. Secondly that the baked looking mud around them might only be a thin crust. Thirdly that the mud underneath the crust is very gloopy and sets solid.

As you can see, I made good use of an abandoned broom to get the worst of it off the bike.

Our route today was straight and flat. We had salt flats on both sides. They are very spectacular and quite an alien landscape for us Lake District residents.

The road was so straight that when we got to a bend, we had to take a picture of it as it approached.

Taking advantage of any shade was important. What this photo does not show is the road only a few feet away. When we popped into a roadside stall for an afternoon coke, I stated that 'Hace mucho calor' (it is very hot). The shop owner replied 'no, es pequeño calor' (no it is a little bit hot). Clearly it is worse than this in summer.

Found a good place for a camp. It has been used before as there is a flat area cleared of rocks and a forgotten head torch with batteries in that still work. The view down to salt flats is pretty good.

We think that Mexico and California have different times (technically the same time zone but CA has daylight saving). At least that would explain why we ended up cooking dinner in the dark
