To the Pacific

To see details of this section:

We left our lovely campspot on the shore of the Gulf of California and headed over to the Pacific coast of Baja where we joined route 1.

We have continued to be amazed by the variety of desert vegetation. We also love the wide open spaces that are just full of places to wild camp.

We had a quick tyre change as the rear one we fitted at Apple Valley was on its last legs after only 930km (note to self: don't buy another Michelin Protek).

We wound our way down a sandy track to find a remote peaceful campspot right by the ocean. We threw the tent up and then dashed into the sea for a swim. Bliss.

After a couple of dry camps washing in the ocean left us feeling cleaner even if we still had the usual salt-water-stickiness.

Lots of interesting tracks in the sand as we set off this morning.

Today we ride down to Guerrero Negro which is the first town of any size we have seen since San Felipe. A chance to stock up on food and other essentials.

It has a museum about the ocean which included this delightful display of desert plants and animals. Speaking of desert plants, we got to try a pitaya yesterday - very tasty.

A comment on different degrees of focus
At any given time we are thinking/planning ahead at various degrees of detail.

On the small scale, we think about where we will have lunch, where we will camp at night, where we will get water etc. This is quite usual and we use Google maps and iOverlander to help with decision making.

On a larger scale, we think about the next mid range destination. Today was Guerrero Negro. Arriving at these destinations always feels like the end of a stage because of the way the brain likes to break large things down into smaller bits. Consequently, it is usual to have a bit of a refocus and to think about where the next such place will be, how many days to get there etc.

Finally, there are the big scale things. These are things like the decision we made to head inland from the Oregon coast, the decision to head through Joshua Tree to the border etc. Completing these require an even greater degree of refocussing as the variety of choices about where to head next is so varied. Each time we have found ourselves in quandary as we ponder what might be the best course of action. There is no way to plan ahead as the brain is so focused on reaching the destination that it feels like an end point in itself. We are acutely aware that getting to La Paz and onto mainland Mexico will be another such point. There is nothing we can do to prepare for it. We just have to wait to get there and deal with it when it comes. In the meantime we plan for each day's activities and let each day build on the next until we get there and are required to make the decision.
