Staying flexible

After yesterday's post about decision making this one seems particularly appropriate.
As we were browsing maps on our phones we spotted an island in the lagoon. We could not believe our eyes when we zoomed in on it and found that it had a causeway road out to it and, better than that, a campsite.
There was no way we could turn down the opportunity so we rearranged our plans. Had a leisurely start to the day in Guerrero Negro. This included getting my cycling sandals repaired as the sole was coming away at the toes and the heel strap had separated from the velcro. This tested the limits of our Spanish as we asked for advice about where we could get a repair done. We were very glad of the lessons we had had on directions! Tracked down a cobbler on a back street who has done an amazing, robust fix for the equivalent of £2.50 (we spent half that amount on a drink to have while he did the repair).
The road out to the island is quite something. There are wetlands on either side that are teeming with birds.
(Hey, Mum - please note that I'm wearing a different shirt)
The campground is wonderfully low key. A couple of shelters on the shore and toilets. No showers: no water. Just our kind of place. We whiled away an afternoon swimming and watching pelicans diving for fish. Lovely and relaxing.
The island is in a huge lagoon which is an important place for grey whales as they come here to give birth to their young. Sadly we are too early for the whale season - this means we have got here quicker than the grey whales we saw at Vancouver Island and off the Oregon coast.
The sand on the causeway had been dampened overnight by the sea air and was very sticky. The bike ended up covered and we were glad of the belt drive as a chain would have suffered greatly.
Rode inland on a route that will take us through San Ignacio and back to the Gulf of California. We are hoping we might get to see some of the Baja 1000 as it heads North from La Paz on Thursday.
