San Ignacio

We made it to San Ignacio and discovered that there were impromptu pit stops everywhere in readiness for the Baja 1000 riders/drivers coming through. We chatted to a guy whose son was racing (he won his class the year before) and discovered that the race was passing the next day and that the 'chase' (support vehicles) would be driving north at breakneck speed trying to keep up with their teams. We decided that it would be good to have a rest so that we could watch the race pass and resume riding when the race was north of us and the roads quieter.

We are staying at a literal oasis. Our tent is pitched beneath palm trees. The camp site is really well presented with lots of nice details as well as clean showers with hot water (even we appreciate a treat when we find one)

San Ignacio is an old Spanish mission with a town square and architecture unlike anything we have seen in Mexico so far.

We are enjoying the usual rest day tranquility of doing very little and catching up on odd jobs like fixing slow leaks in sleeping mats and sewing repairs to my sheet sleeping bag (it was starting to resemble a sheet sleeping rag).

However, we have the added bonus of watching riders and racers pass by the campground entrance. The motorcyclists started at 1am and in 10 hours they have already covered 500 miles (having ridden for about 5 of those hours in the dark). Astonishing.
