https://strava.app.link/T3BvgdltTEbDespite the sound of Baja 1000 racers going past the campsite at San Ignacio at intervals during the night we managed to sleep quite well. I was pleased to see some of the tail-enders come though as these were often the ones in the class for air-cooled VW engines and the sound of them took me back to our type 2 campervan owning days.
We had a late start and didn't get far that day. We camped in sight of the Tres Virgenes volcano (see Rachel's Instagram post for more details). A dense mist rolled in just as we were leaving and was quite atmospheric.
Dropping out the mist on the other side and seeing the volcano was quite amazing.
The next point of interest was Santa Rosalía. (Again see Rachel's Instagram post for more details). One of the activities we entertained ourselves with was pushing our limited Spanish to the limits to get more fuel for the Trangia (Dad - we are using the one that used to be yours!). Eventually tracked some down in a hardware store in a bottle that used to hold 'salsa piquante'. Alcohol needs to be very pure to burn in the Trangia and the bottle didn't say what percentage it was. I asked the shop owner and he simply said 'mas fuerte' (very strong). It certainly is and it burns like a dream.
Took lots of photos of the beautifully painted houses in town and soaked up the bustling vibe.
Camped for the night at Los Dos Amigos. Had the campground to ourselves and were treated to a stunning sunset. Could hardly believe our eyes. Sadly the lagoon is very shallow and was no good for swimming.
We headed south through Mulegé. This was another oasis on a river. We have got so used to seeing rivers marked on Google maps only to find them dried out that we were quite taken aback to see an actual river with actual water in it.
Lovely coastal riding in the afternoon. We are keen to get to Loreto on Monday and so it took all our willpower to resist stopping at some of the places we saw. We are very happy that we did though as we ended up with a tiny beach all to ourselves looking across the Isla Requeson. Ended a hot and tiring day with a swim in the sea. Perfect.
On the ride to Loreto, we discovered the Mexican equivalent of a power gel. It was a another hot day and we had a raging tailwind. It was a hilly day so we were glad of the energy boost provided by the dulce de leche.
We added another snack food to our repertoire today: popcorn. Easy to make by the roadside, tasty and filling.
Glad to have made it to Loreto where we are staying for 2 nights. We have treated ourselves to a hostel after 16 consecutive nights in the tent. Luxury.
