Joshua Tree (almost)

Long distance cycle touring certainly gets you into some off-the-beaten-track places. I'm writing this sitting in some shade at a park in a tiny place on the outskirts of Joshua Tree which, wonder of wonders, has free wi-fi.

We rolled out of Apple Valley saying goodbye to our warmshowers host Anita and her cute dog Archie. Apple Valley did not have any apples growing in it (on a similar note our next destination Lucerne Valley did not have any lucerne growing).

We passed a cycle shop and poked our heads in to find it really well stocked so we decided to get a new tyre as the back one was getting quite worn. Fitted it outside the shop.

We really are in arid country here. No chance to cool off in creeks. We are glad the temperatures have dropped a bit and are generally glad of a bit of a headwind to cool us down.

We got to Lucerne Valley and looked around the wonderful 'water awareness' garden. So many stunning flowers that all thrive in the desert environment.

We knew we would have a dry camp that night and do filled up our surplus water carrier with 6L of water and headed out of town. We had not got far before we felt the tell tale squidge of the rear tyre going flat. The new tube I had bought with the tyre had failed at the valve. Very annoying.

We easily found a good campspot in the desert and pitched the tent with no need for the flysheet and with stunning evening colours all around us.

We love the desert riding. The air is warm and dry, the views are amazing and the sense of space is superb.

So far, we have found it easy to keep hydrated as we stop here, there and everywhere to ask for water refills. The most interesting of the day was at an orchid farm that had the most exquisite blooms in display accompanied by particularly delicate, sweet scent.

We will be staying with a warmshowers host tonight in the town of Joshua Tree before heading into the National Park then heading south via the Salton Sea towards the Mexican border at Mexicali.
