Red Hill to Red Rock canyon

To see details of this section

We left Alabama Hills having had lots of fun with the rocks.

Dropped down into ...

... and treated ourselves to diner breakfast as we had some big miles to cover and wanted to be efficient with our time. We were also feeling in need of a calorie boost as we are noticing the slimming effect of life on the bike.

We continued to make full use of the cooling effects of every creek we passed.
Our average daily spend has increased by $1 as we have been unable to resist to restorative effects of a cold coke mid afternoon. Gas stations are also a good place to find shade in this open landscape.
We bumped into Tim at a service station who had taken a photo of us as we were heading into Alabama Hills.

Temperatures have been up into the 30s so we were not tempted by a detour into Death Valley.

Our next stop was Red Hill for the Fossil Falls campsite. In case you were wondering about the name of the hill, the next picture should give you a clue.

Another great campsite.

Quick trip to Fossil Falls before starting to pedal. Quite amazing. It is where a creek used to run before a lava flow cut it off. The sensation of being at a waterfall where the water had just been turned off was quite extraordinary.

We had truly heartwarming experience on the road. We  were riding along and car stopped just ahead of us. The driver got out and thrust two bottles of cold water into our hands then drove off. We managed to catch his name, Sam. So generous and kind.

We rode though lots of these trees. Have a look at Rachel's Instagram post to read more about them.

Into Inyokern (named as it is on the border of those two counties) to pick up a parcel containing a camera that Em had kindly posted out to us.

Long hot afternoon ride in the heat, uphill and into a headwind towards Red Rock canyon. A layer of clay sits on top of a layer of sandstone and leads to some jaw dropping features.

We are going to have a rest day here (which was pre planned and has nothing to do with finding out the campground has free wi-fi!)
