Into Oregon
We have crossed Washington and are now in Oregon. Our second state.
After our troublesome day we rode along the North of the Columbia River and marveled at the size of it. While we were having our lunch beside it, a paddle steamer sailed past and we felt like we had gone back in time.
We crossed the river from Cathlamet via bridge and ferry. Our destination was Gnats Creek campsite. On the way we passed the Gnat Hatchery and chuckled at the idea of gnats being hatched (as opposed to the river network that is an important fish hatchery).
The campsite was lovely. Five spaces for tents only. No tap, only a set of steps down to the creek for water and bathing. Simple and perfect for cyclists.
Next day we rode along the southern side of the river to Astoria looking at the 4 mile long Astoria bridge that we had read a lot about (mainly written by other cyclists who commented on how scary it was to ride!). We were treated to a cycle path all the way into the city. There were huge groups of sea lions everywhere as they all gather at this time of year because of the salmon heading upstream.
Stocked up on supplies enough to see us through a rest day at Fort Stevens state park right at the mouth of the river. Yet more great bridges to cross in order to reach camp.
Looking forward to resting our legs and doing some laundry as well as planning our route south down the coast.
